James Eugene "Gene" Glover Sr., age 90, passed away on Saturday, February 4th, 2012. He was born on June 7, 1921 in Moundville, Alabama to James Guthrie and Essie Bee Rodgers Glover. They moved from Alabama to Austwell Texas when he was 7 months old. He graduated from Austwell High School in 1939. In 1942 he entered the Air Force and became an aircraft mechanic and was sent to the Ascension Islands where he worked on planes that were to be sent to the War in Africa. He came back to the states in 1943...

James Eugene "Gene" Glover Sr., age 90, passed away on Saturday, February 4th, 2012. He was born on June 7, 1921 in Moundville, Alabama to James Guthrie and Essie Bee Rodgers Glover. They moved from Alabama to Austwell Texas when he was 7 months old. He graduated from Austwell High School in 1939. In 1942 he entered the Air Force and became an aircraft mechanic and was sent to the Ascension Islands where he worked on planes that were to be sent to the War in Africa. He came back to the states in 1943 to attend pilot training and graduated as Second Lieutenant; after graduation he became a flight instructor for twin engine planes and was then sent to B-24 Pilot training and was assigned to the 38th Bomb Sqn 30th Medium Bomb Group in Hawaii as First Lieutenant. The war ended and he returned home to Austwell, Texas and began farming; he also worked for Union Carbide as a plant operator for 24 years. In 1984 he moved to Victoria to be near his daughter and youngest son. Gene was a charter member of John Wesley United Methodist Church; he enjoyed fishing, oystering, gardening, camping and playing dominoes.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Pauline Glover, Clarice Riley & Gwen Shannon; brother, W. M. Glover; his beloved wife, Ella Violet Erekson Glover of 55 years; son, Jack Autry and grandson, Nick Comstock.

He is survived by two sisters, Ellen Jackson of Corpus Christi and Deanie (husband Harvey) Wise of Tivoli; sister-in-law, Norma Jean Glover of Tivoli; his children Jim (wife Cheryl) Glover of Victoria; Larry Glover of Edna; Jo Ellen (husband Rick) Comstock of Victoria; daughter-in-law Madelyn Autry of San Antonio; eleven grandchildren, R.J. (wife Teesha) Autry, Scott (wife Lisa) Autry, Chrysalis (husband Mark) Heinkel, Shawnette Kyle, Ashten Glover, Colin Glover, Mollie (husband Gray) Powell, Sean McIver, Chris (wife DJ) Comstock, Amy Barnes, Eric Barnes; and ten great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David King officiating. Full military honors will be held at the church service under Auspices of Victoria County Veterans Council, AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, Ex-POW, MOPH, VVA and the KWV. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 pm Wednesday at the Tivoli Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Presbyterian Church in Tivoli, Tx. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers include Mac Johnson, Bill Wilson, Alvin Kubicec, Fred Arndt, and Wayne Jacobs.
