Alex Lopez, Jr, 81, of Victoria, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015. He was born on July 31, 1933 in Edna, Texas to the late Alex Lopez, Sr. and Rita Garcia Lopez. Alex proudly served in the U. S. Air Force. He retired from ALCOA as an electrician and a member of the 25 year club. He enjoyed playing golf, was a member of the Pan American Golf Association (PAGA) and the Riverside Golf Course Association, as well as serving on their boards. Alex Lopez, Jr, 81, of Victoria, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015. He was born on July 31, 1933 in Edna, Texas to the late Alex Lopez, Sr. and Rita Garcia Lopez. Alex proudly served in the U. S. Air Force. He retired from ALCOA as an electrician and a member of the 25 year club. He enjoyed playing golf, was a member of the Pan American Golf Association (PAGA) and the Riverside Golf Course Association, as well as serving on their boards. Alex headed the Ruben Ramos Celebrity Golf Tournaments in Austin, TX to raise funds for various children's hospitals. He was active in church activities and always tried to find ways to assist in raising funds for Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and in youth activities. Alex also loved music and was a member of the ACTS community.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janie Calderon Lopez, of Victoria; daughters, Sylvia A. Lopez of Cedar Park, Christy Vela and Nora Cavazos, both of Victoria and Debra Wilson of Pearland; sons, Alex "Buddy" Lopez III of Victoria, Joseph "Tony" Gonzalez, (Mary Alice) of Corpus Christi, and Robert B. Lopez, of Evansville, Indiana; sisters, Carmen Riojas and Delores Garcia Thomas, both of Houston, and Mary Martinez (Victor) of Ganado; brothers, Joe Lopez of Houston, and Leroy Lopez of Bay City; 21 grandchildren; 29 great grandchild; and 1 great-great grandchild.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rita Lopez; brothers, Julio, John and Frank Lopez; and son-in-law, Joe Cavazos.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 PM, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 followed by a rosary to be recited at 7 PM at Colonial Funeral Home.
A Funeral Mass will be held 9:00 AM Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Full Military Honors under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be Rick De La Garza, Randy Ramirez, Louis Martinez, Ralph Gonzales, John Gonzales, Ralph Escalona, Martin Sanchez and Jesse Escalante.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Pan American Golf Association, Little Joe Hernandez, Johnny Hernandez, Vincent Manzanales, Ruben Ramos, Tomas Cruz, Bob Gallarza, Mark and Ruben Ramos, Jr, Skeeter Amesquite and Bobby Butler "Charro Negro".
Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Church or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
